Tour de Suisse – 4e étape : João Almeida frappe fort en solitaire au Splügenpass, Onley et O’Connor complètent le podium
João Almeida a signé une démonstration de force lors de la 4e étape du Tour de Suisse 2025, en s’imposant en solitaire après une échappée de 53 kilomètres dans les Alpes. Une victoire tactique et stratégique qui relance le Portugais au classement général, malgré un retard conséquent après une première journée difficile.
L’étape de 193,2 km entre Heiden et Piuro, en Italie, a offert un scénario de haute montagne ponctué de deux ascensions majeures, dont le redoutable Splügenpass (catégorie 1, 8,8 km à 7,4 %). C’est sur ses pentes que la course a basculé.
UAE fait exploser la course, Almeida s’envole. Dès les premières rampes du Splügenpass, l’équipe UAE Team Emirates-XRG a pris le contrôle du peloton, éliminant les derniers rescapés de l’échappée matinale. Jan Christen a ensuite lancé deux accélérations décisives avant qu’Almeida ne prenne seul les devants à 1,8 km du sommet.
Oscar Onley (Picnic-PostNL) et Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) ont tenté de suivre, mais ont cédé sous l’allure imposée par le grimpeur portugais, tout comme Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R), qui rejoindra plus tard Onley dans la descente.
Almeida a basculé en tête au sommet, avec 40 secondes d’avance sur ses poursuivants directs. Il a ensuite parfaitement géré les 35 kilomètres de descente jusqu’à la vallée, avant de résister dans les ultimes montées menant à Piuro.
Une victoire maîtrisée, un podium solide derrière. Malgré quelques tentatives d’attaque dans la descente, notamment de Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) et O’Connor, le peloton n’a pas su s’organiser pour combler l’écart. À l’approche de l’arrivée, seul un duo Onley-O’Connor est parvenu à se détacher, reprenant du temps sur leurs rivaux.
Almeida franchit la ligne en vainqueur avec 40 secondes d’avance. Onley prend la 2e place, O’Connor la 3e. Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ), toujours en jaune, termine cinquième à 1:10, en compagnie de Vauquelin.
Grégoire limite les dégâts, Almeida remonte au général. Leader au départ, Grégoire a été distancé sur l’ascension mais a pu limiter la casse dans la descente, aidé par Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor). Il conserve le maillot jaune pour seulement 25 secondes devant Vauquelin et 56 sur O’Connor. Almeida, malgré sa brillante performance, reste à 2:07 au général, handicapé par son débours de la première étape.
Thomas non partant, l’échappée du jour avortée. Avant même le départ, la journée a été marquée par l’abandon de Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), blessé la veille.
La suite : Santa Maria in Calanca, nouvelle bataille en vue. La 5e étape s’annonce tout aussi décisive avec une arrivée musclée à Santa Maria in Calanca. Almeida, en quête de nouveaux gains, devra poursuivre son offensive. Grégoire, lui, n’aura qu’une mince marge à défendre, tandis qu’O’Connor et Vauquelin sont prêts à s’emparer du maillot jaune au moindre faux pas.
