Tour de Suisse – Étape 5 : Oscar Onley s’impose au sommet de Calanca, Kévin Vauquelin prend le maillot jaune
Oscar Onley a remporté ce jeudi la 5e étape du Tour de Suisse, considérée comme l’étape reine, en devançant João Almeida au sprint au sommet de Santa Maria in Calanca. Le Britannique signe ainsi sa deuxième victoire professionnelle, à l’issue d’une journée marquée par des ascensions exigeantes et un scénario haletant.
Une étape décisive en montagne. La journée s’annonçait redoutable, avec quatre cols de première catégorie au programme, dont une double montée du Castaneda et une arrivée en altitude. Le départ de l’étape à La Punt fut également chargé d’émotion : un hommage a été rendu à Gino Mäder, tragiquement disparu deux ans plus tôt après une chute sur l’Albulapass. Un mémorial en son honneur a été inauguré avant le départ.
Très tôt, une échappée de cinq coureurs s’est formée : Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Aleksandr Vlasov (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), Lorenzo Fortunato (Astana Qazaqstan Team) et Javier Romo. Malgré leur ténacité, l’écart n’a jamais dépassé les trois minutes, sous la pression constante du peloton, dynamité par l’équipe UAE.
UAE met le feu dans le San Bernardino. Comme lors de la veille, UAE Team Emirates a dicté le tempo sur les pentes du Passo del San Bernardino. À 70 km de l’arrivée, le peloton explosait déjà, laissant une cinquantaine de coureurs à l’avant. Vlasov engrangeait les points du classement de la montagne, puis la descente rapide menait les échappés vers le Castaneda, théâtre du premier tournant majeur.
À mi-ascension, l’équipe Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale prenait le relais en tête du peloton, travaillant pour Felix Gall. L’allure s’intensifiait, provoquant de Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ), leader du général, rapidement distancé.
Attaque d’Almeida, Vauquelin s’accroche. À 400 mètres du sommet, João Almeida plaçait une attaque tranchante, réduisant le groupe des favoris à une poignée d’hommes : Vauquelin, Alaphilippe (Tudor), Gall, Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep), Onley et Riccitello. Devant, Bilbao et Vlasov ne comptaient que 14 secondes d’avance.
Dans la descente vers Calanca, les poursuivants revenaient rapidement, et à neuf kilomètres de l’arrivée, tout était regroupé. Nouvelle accélération du rythme, nouveau tri : Ben O’Connor (Jayco AlUla) cédait à son tour, tandis qu’Alaphilippe lançait les hostilités dans le final.
Onley contre Almeida : un duel au sommet. À trois kilomètres de l’arrivée, Onley partait en solitaire. Almeida, fidèle à sa stratégie, remontait progressivement avant de le rejoindre à un kilomètre de la ligne. Les deux hommes collaboraient peu, le Portugais assumant l’essentiel du travail. Dans les 300 derniers mètres, Onley lançait son sprint. Almeida réagissait, mais trop tard : le jeune Britannique résistait jusqu’à la ligne.
Felix Gall complétait le podium, à 23 secondes. Kévin Vauquelin franchissait la ligne à 57 secondes, suffisant pour endosser le maillot jaune, tandis que Romain Grégoire, à bout de forces, concédait près de sept minutes et perdait toute chance au général.
Classement général chamboulé avant le chrono. Avec cette arrivée spectaculaire, le classement général est bouleversé. Vauquelin prend la tête avec 29 secondes d’avance sur Alaphilippe et 39 sur Almeida. Le Portugais, malgré son retard initial, reste un prétendant sérieux à la victoire finale avec deux étapes de montagne et un contre-la-montre à venir.
