Tour de France, étape 19 : Arensman triomphe à La Plagne, Vingegaard et Pogačar battus au sommet
Thymen Arensman a frappé fort ce vendredi en remportant sa deuxième victoire d’étape sur ce Tour de France, au sommet de La Plagne, au terme d’un effort en solitaire héroïque. Sur une étape alpestre raccourcie à 95 km, le grimpeur néerlandais a résisté de justesse au retour des favoris du général, devançant Jonas Vingegaard et Tadej Pogačar de seulement deux secondes sur la ligne. Épuisé, Arensman s’est effondré juste après l’arrivée, abasourdi par sa performance : « Déjà gagner une étape était incroyable, mais là, face aux meilleurs grimpeurs du monde, c’est irréel. Je n’ai pas de mots. »
L’étape, initialement prévue sur 129,9 km, a été modifiée à la dernière minute à cause d’une épidémie de dermatose nodulaire bovine repérée dans un troupeau local. Le Col des Saisies a été retiré du parcours, laissant place à un tracé ultra-exigeant, concentré autour de trois ascensions : le Col du Pré (12,6 km à 9,2 %), le Cormet de Roselend (5,8 km à 6,5 %) et l’arrivée au sommet de La Plagne (19,4 km à 7,2 %).
Arensman attaque, les cadors tergiversent
La bataille pour l’étape s’est déclenchée à 14 km de l’arrivée. Arensman a lancé une offensive tranchante depuis un groupe de favoris réduit, profitant d’un marquage entre Pogačar et Vingegaard, qui ont choisi de ne pas le suivre immédiatement. Ce choix a laissé une brèche dont le Néerlandais a tiré parti pour s’envoler.
Sous une pluie battante, l’écart est resté stable entre 20 et 30 secondes. Pogačar a tenté de hausser le rythme dans les derniers kilomètres, sans parvenir à décrocher Vingegaard, ni à revenir sur Arensman, qui a résisté jusqu’au bout. « Je savais qu’ils allaient se regarder. Je n’avais rien à perdre, pas de classement à défendre. J’ai tout mis sur cette montée » a expliqué Arensman.
Derrière, Jonas Vingegaard a devancé Tadej Pogačar au sprint pour la deuxième place, tandis que Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) a terminé quatrième. Une performance précieuse pour l’Allemand, qui consolide sa troisième place au général en reprenant du temps à Oscar Onley (Picnic-PostNL).
Pogačar toujours en jaune, Vingegaard se rapproche
Tadej Pogačar conserve son maillot jaune avec 4’24 d’avance sur Vingegaard, et 11’09 sur Lipowitz. Le Slovène, lucide, a commenté la stratégie du jour : « Le rythme était infernal dès le pied. J’ai préféré grimper à mon rythme. Arensman a très bien joué le coup. »
Une étape courte, mais nerveuse
Dès les premiers kilomètres, Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) s’est imposé au sprint intermédiaire à Villard-sur-Doron. La course s’est ensuite enflammée dans l’ascension du Col du Pré, où Primož Roglič (Red Bull-BORA-Hansgrohe) et Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) ont faussé compagnie au peloton.
Rejoints par Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal-QuickStep), les trois hommes ont brièvement mené la course, Martinez s’emparant des points du classement de la montagne aux sommets du Col du Pré puis du Cormet de Roselend.
Roglič a ensuite creusé un écart en descente, mais a rapidement été repris sur les pentes de La Plagne. Épuisé, il a été distancé, incapable d’accompagner Lipowitz dans le final.
Un groupe d’élite dans le final
À 15 km du sommet, une sélection de 13 coureurs s’est formée : Pogačar, Vingegaard, Arensman, Lipowitz, Onley, Healy, Gall, Johannessen, entre autres. La dernière ascension a offert un mano a mano tactique entre les favoris, tandis qu’Arensman s’échappait, maintenant son avance malgré les efforts conjoints de Pogačar et Vingegaard.
Healy, Gall et Johannessen ont été lâchés dans les pourcentages les plus sévères. Onley a fini par céder dans les deux derniers kilomètres, alors que Lipowitz durcissait le tempo pour éviter tout retour.
Dans les derniers mètres, Vingegaard et Pogačar ont débordé Lipowitz pour compléter le podium, mais trop tard pour priver Arensman de sa victoire.
