Si Peter Sagan était – sur le papier – le grandissime favori de cette 13e étape du Giro 2020, la surprise du jour est venue de Diego Ulissi qui a signé un bien beau succès sur son Tour National. Le sprinteur de la formation UAE Team Emirates a « réglé » une petite vingtaine de coureurs qui ont réussi à dompter les deux ascensions présentes dans le final de l’étape du jour. A Monselice, après 192 kilomètres de course, c’est Diego Ulissi qui l’a emporté au sprint devant le maillot rose Joao Almeida (Deceuninck-QuickStep) et Patrick Konrad (Bora-hansgrohe). Le Français Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) n’a pu faire mieux que 52e à l’arrivée. Peter Sagan 24e.

Belle photo montrant l’arrivée trés serrée entre les trois premiers. Les coureurs figurent dans des positions trés similaires et pourtant leur progression dans le sprint a été trés différente… Le maillot rose Almeida parait cependant faire un erreur « de jeunesse » pourrait-on dire : il laisse Ulissi occuper la position immédiatement derrière Honoré, son propre lanceur …. C’en est trop d’honneur pour l’expérimenté Ulissi qui conserve l’avantage et s’arrache jusqu’à la ligne… Remarquons qu’Honoré n’en termine pas moins cinquième, illustrant la force collective des Quickstep… Venant de derrière, Konrad revient trés prés.. Konrad dispose de la force, mais ii ne possède pas le jump d’un pur sprinter et le hongrois se trouve un peu loin à l’amorce du dernier rush !…
