RÉSULTAT. Le général a basculé à l’issue de la cinquième et dernière étape du Tour de Burgos 2021 remportée par Hugh Carthy (EF Education – NIPPO). Romain Bardet qui était leader s’est fait distancer et a lâché trop de temps pour espérer conserver une partie de son avantage. Le Français finit même cette course par étapes espagnole hors du podium, à la 6e place. C’est Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) le vainqueur de la 43e édition. L’Espagnol déjà lauréat en 2017 devance Fabio Aru (Team Qhubeka NextHash) qui n’avait plus affiché un tel niveau depuis trois saisons, et Mark Padun (Bahrain Victorious) révélation du dernier Critérium du Dauphiné complète le podium.

Landa remporte la course en 18h30mn tout rond, de quoi lire plus facilement les écarts; Aru second est-il de retour, réponse sur la vuelta… Padun 3é, heureusement qu’il n’a pas gagné, Bardet aurait trouvé un parfait bourreau médiatique; G. Bouchard 9é et qui ne se contente plus des pois de la montagne, c’est un bon classement malgré sa chute en descendant le Picon.
